Pyramids and Pirogs

I was looking for information on vitamins and in which food to find them when I bumped into this great site from the American Department of Agriculture. Maman, je te montrerai comment ca marche quand on viendra en Juillet! 🙂

Beside the fact that the navigation is not very good, this site is full of excellent and, at least as far as I can tell, science-based information about how to have a reasonably balanced diet with all necessary vitamins.
Under the ‘Supertracker’ link you can enter everything you eat every day and see what you have been missing. You can also enter everything you do in 24h and calculate how much energy that requires. It is a bit tedious the first time but there is a way to save the stuff you do every day so that you do not need to re-enter them. It’s perfect for a one time user to enter food and activity of a typical day, just to see if there is any huge change needed and for those who want to loose or gain wait, it is a great tool.

I thought I had a very balanced diet and to my surprise I discovered that I need to start stuffing myself with nuts and milk and eat a lot more vegetables! So I changed my breakfast for musli. Miam! I also realized that the maximum amount of salt per day one should take is 2.3g which is about half a tea spoon! I know exactly what it means because when I make bread I use half of the 10 g in the recipe for a medium bread of which I eat at least a third per day without even thinking about it!

To celebrate my return to a healthier diet, I then proceeded to eat two Karelska pirog, some delicious Finnish rye bread filled with lightly salted rice pudding and covered with a mix of hard boiled eggs and butter… Divin!! 🙂
